Biomass - Energy Toolbox

Growing our own Fertility and Fuel

This video was commissioned by BEASL, the Bioenergy Association of Sri Lanka and shown at the 2005 Colombo conference. It provides a clear statement of the state of play of the development of dendro power at that time in Sri Lanka. Dendro power is presented not just as an alternative form of energy but as an alternative or additional form of income for small farmers able to grow a suitable fast growing coppice for sale to a local generation plant. At the same time, there can be other direct benefits to the farmer in terms of improved soil fertility and also the provision of a high quality animal fodder if the coppice crop is a leguminous species. BEASL is putting much emphasis on the promotion of the tree Gliricidia sepium, which is widely cultivated throughout the country and throughout South Asia.
